Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment.
A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.
(National Curriculum)
Our approach
At Greet we use the Power Maths scheme. This is a mastery programme created in partnership with White Rose Maths and is followed by teachers at Greet for children in Reception to Year 6.
The scheme takes a mastery approach to mathematics. Learning time is spent reinforcing core knowledge, and depth of knowledge is prioritised. Our aim is for our pupils to gain a deep understanding of Maths and be confident, resilient mathematicians with a passion for the subject.
For each year group, the curriculum is broken down into core concepts, taught in units. A unit divides into smaller learning steps – lessons. Step by step, strong foundations of cumulative knowledge and understanding are built.
As a school we introduce new concepts to pupils by using concrete representations to link the children's understanding of pictorial representations and abstract methods.
- Textbooks & Practice Books: Textbooks provide a coherent structure through the curriculum and support children on their journey towards deeper understanding. Practice Books enable intelligent practice for children to complete independently.
- Teacher Guides: Support for day-to-day teaching, including how to provide extra stretch or support for children during each lesson.
- Online Toolkit: Textbooks and interactive teaching tools, plus ‘strengthen’ and ‘deepen’ activities, an assessment markbook, teacher PD videos are provided for staff online.
See our Year Group Overviews page here for a breakdown of the units studied.
Maths Flex - a quick tour
Maths Flex uses instant adaptive learning through powerful software to provide intelligent maths practice. The AI constantly adapts to the pupil’s own strengths and weaknesses which helps to scaffold and stretch the children's understanding. For a child working towards expectations, it provides pre-requisite learning and intervention, and for those exceeding expectations, it delivers stretch activities (nuggets) without moving them ahead of their peers. Therefore, children continue to receive personalised learning beyond the classroom.
